Storybook Favorites
After glancing over some of the titles from past years, I picked three favorites, which was very hard to do! It is amazing to me to see such creativity after always writing so formally in my other classes. Now for the big reveal...
1. Love at First Retweet
Just a glimpse of the title, I thought of a cute love story set in the modern era where Twitter was popular. Who doesn't love love stories? This cute title first caught my attention because as a little girl, I always dreamt of a happily ever after love story. A story good enough to remembered for years to come.
After reading the little short stories warping the old stories we know into new ones that use different social media sites, I am amazed to see how the author used the details from each old story and made them fit into this modern tale! Also, I really enjoyed the screenshots of the Tinder profiles and Myspace conversations in the story.

The title was very clever, but a little misleading. I thought Twitter would be involved... However, the Intro was very intention grabbing because it introduced the tragic childhood stories as modern love stories. The colors set the mood, and making "social media" into a person was very clever. Overall, I loved it! Definitely will add some sort of wit to my own project!
Greek mythology and a rom-com all in one? This story definitely made me excited to read. What a classic spin on how Zeus met his wife and had affairs in the modern day! Similar to the last story, I again love the idea of using an old story and adapting it to modern reality with a twist. I liked how the author included Hera being very serious about marriage and Aphrodite's modeling career, which related to their respective representations in Greek mythology. I wish there were more pictures, making the site more eye-catching. I wished there was more on how Zeus reacted after the reveal of his affairs.

With the new live-action Aladdin movie coming out this year, I was inspired to read this new take on Aladdin. I like how the Author's Note at the end explains the deviations to the story and why the author decided to write certain details. It was nice to see the female in the story being the leader and saving Aladdin rather than the typical male saving the "damsel in distress". I wished it showed Zakiya's perspective in the story because the introduction talked about Zakiya showing Aladdin "a whole new world", which was a very cute play on words. I wanted to read more details on the love story between the two!

You picked some really fun projects here, Anhthu! And as you can see, that modernization option is so powerful, bringing new ideas, new technology, etc. into the old stories -- or just using a new perspective (rich Aladdin and poor Zakiya). Nobody ever retells a story the same way as another person, and that means every semester in this class is a new story adventure! :-)
