Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche, Part A

Psyche's Husband Revealed translated into English by Toby Kline (2013)
  • After Psyche's family thoroughly convinced her that her husband could be this evil creature trying to kill her, she decided to take a peek at her husband, the one to whom she has lost her virginity and the one who she embraces every night.
  • Thus, one night when her husband was asleep, she ,holding a razor and a lantern, shone the light towards him and realizes it was Cupid, the god of love himself.
  • It was then where she fell in love with love even more.
  • However, feeling guilty that she didn't listen to his relentless warnings about not looking at his appearance, she embraced him and smothered him with kisses.
  • Cupid woke up because of the startling kisses and embraces and then realized that his beautiful wife has betrayed him by taking a look.
  • Thus, he fled away, vowing to take revenge on those that had persuaded her.

I really like Psyche's character in this part of the story. She is just so curious, and this curiosity will cause her more trouble later. I will incorporate the curiosity into the woman character of my story. The whole story would be changed into a story about an arranged marriage to a prince. However, there is a curse that the wife shall never see her husband. Thus, her curiosity gets the best of her, and the rest of the story would be similar to that of Psyche and Cupid
