Reading Notes: King Arthur, Part A

The Drawing of the Sword by Andrew Lang (1902)
  • After the King of Britain died, every Knight in the kingdom wished to become the new king.
  • Merlin, the magician, went to meet with the Archbishop of Canterbury and agreed that the lords of Britain should meet in London.
    • Why London? Add the part about Christmas Day.
  • On that day, they walked out of the church and saw a stone with a sword in it along with a sign that said whoever that can pull the sword out will be King.
    • Where did this sword come from?
  • No one could pull out of the sword.
    • Story behind the magical powers of the sword.
  • There was a brave Knight named Sir Ector and his son Sir Kay, as well as Arthur, Kay's foster-brother.
    • Give more information about who Arthur is.
  • Kay had told Arthur to get his sword for the tournament because he had forgotten it at home.
  • The door at the house was locked, but he saw a sword in the stone. He pulled it out and brought  the sword to Sir Kay.
  • Sir Kay knew this was the sword in the stone and told his father that he is the rightful King.
  • Sir Kay then told his father that it was his brother, Arthur, that gave it to him. They then put the sword back in the stone to see if Arthur can pull it out again.
  • Arthur was named King.
