Reading Notes: Great Plains, Reading A
The Forked Roads by Katharine Berry Judson (1913).
- A man died in a village and was buried.
- How did he die?
- His ghost had to walk a dark trail for four nights to get to the Milky Way, where there was a lot of light.
- This is why people keep their funerals lighted for four nights in order to help the spirit find his way.
- The ghost finally came to a point where there was a fork.
- More details!
- One side led to the land of good ghosts, and the other had wailing ghosts all along the trail.
- Why were there two roads and how did they end up there?
- Those who commit suicides are forced to hover the graves.
- Ghosts whistle around the spirit who murdered them. They are forced to suffer their whole lives, even their after lives.
