Reading Notes: Tibet, Part B
The Story of the Three Hunters by A.L. Shelton with illustrations by Mildred Bryant (1925)
- There were three brothers, each with a wife, who lived with their little sister.
- One day, they went out and hunted a deer, giving one of the leg bones to their sister.
- The wives of the two oldest brothers were jealous and angry that all of the attention was given to her and decided to kill her. The wife of the youngest brother did not want to partake because she didn't think the sister did anything wrong.
- This is a little crazy. Maybe they wanted to make the brothers kick the sister out.
- When the brothers left one day, the women put the plan to action.
- On the way home, there was a bird that kept singing to the brothers. They wondered if it was their sister since it sounded like her. They asked if it was and the bird flew onto their hands. It was confirmed that she had died, and the soul had transferred to this bird.
- This is so cute, but a modernization oft his could be that they met someone who saw their sister on the streets!
- They were very upset, so when they came home and saw the wife of the youngest brother crying, they immediately forced her to spill the beans. She told them what had happened and so the other two wives were killed. The wife that was left was shared among the brothers.
- This is too extreme. They all married the wife that was left? I would change this to something more modern.
